For Alex and Rakai, Uganda

Hello & Welcome!

PLEASE READ UPDATE:
Hello everyone - I have an important update to share. Two weeks ago, I went in for my first medical appt - vaccinations, tests, malaria meds, etc - and got some rotten news. Turns out I am allergic (even after a second opinion) to 2 of the 3 required drugs used to safeguard against malaria.

I could still go - but the chances were not good and my pastor's daughter had gotten it (malaria) and was still not back to herself after more than a year. In the end, I did decide not to go - largely because of the fatal dengue fever which is a mosquito bourne illness also. I am hopeful that at some point in the future, there will be some new options.

RIght now - I am just concentrating on a high quality care package for Alex to send with the team and on thanking each of you who responded and considered this mission. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!!! I am also staying positive and open to what this unexpected twist has in store for me for the future. I know God will lead me to something perfect and has used this experience as a means to accomplish this. It's all about patience, trust and faith - and I am feeling pretty good with waiting to see what he has in store!

Love and blessings,
melissa

IF YOU ARE STILL INTERESTED IN SUPPORTING THE TEAM, PLEASE LET ME KNOW! THANKS!!!

-----------------------------

I want to share with you a rare and wonderful opportunity I have to be a part of a very special mission this Fall.

I will be joining a 20-person team journeying to Rakai, Uganda in East Africa from Christ Presbyterian Church, my home chuch in Minnesota. (www.cpconline.org). We will be working in tandem with World Vision (www.worldvision.org) in Rakai from October 12-21st, 2007.

CPC has formed a long-term partnership with World Vision in Rakai, a community approximately two hours from Kampala, the nation’s capital. Rakai is not only important to CPC because of the nearly 1,500 children that we as a community sponsor there, but also because Rakai is a community that has been ravaged by the AIDS pandemic. Their community needs people to reach out and not only physically help them, like World Vision and CPC are doing, but emotionally reach out to them and show them that people around the world do care about them and their community. My team and I will be serving as ambassadors to this community to learn more about this area of the world, as well as to see the work World Vision is doing and to continue deepening and strengthening the relationship between CPC and Rakai.

I have personally sponsored my own child in Rakai through CPC/World Vision since 2002. Alex is really growing up now at 11 years old. A recent picture of him is at the top of this site (more pics of him over the years, as well as his artwork and report cards are under the Photos link). He is a great kid and I am so excited that as a part of this trip, I will finally get to meet him in person!

I am thrilled to have this unique chance to meet my sponsored child and to work for those in need in Uganda. To make this effort in Rakai become reality, I am looking for partners. First, I am looking for prayer partners who will pray for and encourage me on this trip and I would love if you would help me in this way. Secondly, I am seeking financial partners. I want to ask you each to please consider partnering with me by making a one-time, tax deductible contribution to support this mission.

I would be honored if you were to partner with me in this endeavor. The total cost of this trip is $2,890.00 and includes my transportation, lodging, meals and World Vision expenses. Each team member is responsible for covering his/her own cost. I am forming a support team to help defray this cost.

If you would like to do this, please make your check payable to Christ Presbyterian Church and mail to me at:
4626 Water Oak Drive
Lake Wylie, SC 29710
All support-raising needs to be final and submitted by October 1, 2007.

I will be happy to answer any questions you may have - please call my home at 803-831-1343 or email me (via the Links tab). I will be using this site to keep a diary of events between now and the end of the trip - so be sure to check back for updates!

My very sincere thanks to each of you for your consideration, prayers and support to a cause that it is very near and dear to my heart!
Love to all!
Melissa
